He disobeyed God, rebelled against him, hated the people of Nineveh instead of loving them, was reluctant to preach the gospel, desired the destruction of that city and not its salvation. Despite that, day after day, God was patient with Jonah and granted him mercy. He granted him mercy by saving him from death, by sending the whale to swallow him, and towards the end of the story, by providing shade for him.
